Anessa Marie Scolpini is a music director and conductor who pairs musical excellence with inclusive leadership across Broadway, Off-Broadway, and new-musical development.

ANESSA MARIE SCOLPINI (she/her) is a music director, conductor, pianist, accordionist, composer/lyricist, orchestrator, and arranger based in the NYC area. Equally versed in maintaining long-running productions and working from the ground up in the musical theatre development process, she is sought after for her commitment to excellence and for creating opportunities for traditionally underrepresented groups in the musical theatre industry.

Equally comfortable conducting from behind the piano or standing in front of an ensemble with a baton, Anessa’s experience ranges from educational theatre to Broadway. She most recently served as music director for the Broadway revival of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, and as music supervisor and conductor for a one-night concert of The Drowsy Chaperone at Carnegie Hall, featuring an all-TGNC, star-studded cast and creative team. She also recently concluded the Off-Broadway premiere of Picnic at Hanging Rock at Greenwich House Theatre; the cast album for that production is currently in post-production. Other Broadway credits include Moulin Rouge!, Aladdin, and Chicago.

As a songwriter, Anessa writes for both musical theatre and orchestral stages. During the Covid pandemic, she composed A New York Renaissance for symphony orchestra and piano—a journey toward healing told through six movements. In 2019, she was named a NYMF Artist Fellow and premiered her song cycle Finding Beautiful (written with Danny Bristoll) as part of NYMF’s final season. She has performed solo concerts throughout New York City, and her music has been featured on the stages of Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub, and 54 Below, among others. Current musicals in development include A First Glimpse of Light (music, lyrics, and book) and Hue (music and lyrics, book by Cara Lustik).

As an orchestrator, Anessa loves diving into texture and exploring how to create expansive sound within the many constraints of musical theatre orchestration. Her work has been featured on the stages of Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and in regional and Off-Broadway theatres across the country. Favorite projects include The Wizard of Oz (Geva), Wonderboy (5th Avenue Theatre), Showtime! (Edinburgh Fringe), and The Musical Theatre Songwriting Challenge (ATW, NAMT, NEA).

Anessa is also passionate about opening doors for the next generation of artists. She regularly serves as a music director and mentor with the Musical Theatre Songwriting Challenge, helping students refine their songs and develop their own artistic voices. She has served as a guest artist with NYU, Pace, Fordham, AMDA, and the Goodspeed New Musical Festival, and loves working with students and watching them blossom. She is also a mentor with Maestra, where she has presented workshops on working with TGNC musical talent and served as a panelist for various events. Anessa is a co-founder of TEMPO and a proud member of Local 802.

Anessa works as a music supervisor and director in the theatre industry, and loves that he
