Anessa Marie is a composer/lyricist, music director, orchestrator, and performer based in New York City. In 2019, Anessa debuted Finding Beautiful (developed with Danny Bristoll) as part of NYMF's final season. Anessa was also named the 2019 NYMF Artist Fellow. Other NYC credits as composer include Queering the Canon (Joe's Pub), Beautiful: the Music and Lyrics of Anessa Marie (April 2018) and A Glimpse of the Rainbow (June 2018). Anessa is also currently in development for Reign, a steampunk rock opera based on Christopher Marlowe's Edward II (written with Will Shishmanian). Footprints in the Sand, and a one-woman show to premiere in early 2021. Anessa is also an orchestral composer, having recently completed A New York Renaissance, a 65-minute 6 movement response to living in NYC through COVID-19 and the BLM Movement, for solo piano and symphony orchestra to debut in 2022. Anessa is also currently writing the score for the film Transit, A NY Fairytale, in collaboration with Pooya Mohseni.
In 2020, Anessa founded the Phoenix Trans Chorus of NYC. The organization will have its premiere performance post-COVID once it is safe to gather again. Anessa also works with the Youth Pride Chorus in NYC, and is the resident music director for Trans Voices Trans Cabaret.
A proud member of Maestra Music (Click here for Anessa's Maestra profile), in 2020 Anessa facilitated a workshop with the organization titled "Creating Inclusivity: Working with TGNC Musical Talent" focused on creating a better environment for the transgender-identified population in theatre throughout the casting, rehearsal, and performance process. Anessa also works as a music director/conductor in the theatre community of New York City. Credits include Interstate (NAMT), Finding Beautiful (NYMF), The Office Musical Parody (Off-Broadway), Invisible in Concert (54 Below, directed by Marc Kudisch), American Girl Live (Nat'l Tour), Elevator Heart (Moxie Arts), Into the Woods (OOTB), City of Light (directed by Tony Award winner Cady Huffman as part of SHENYC Summer Theatre Festival), Lysistrata Jones (Ophelia Theatre Group).
She also works regularly with NYU's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program in developing new work.
As a transgender woman, Anessa is especially drawn to telling stories representing the underdogs in society. Anessa's goal is to give a voice to the unheard voices of today, in the hopes that tomorrow will lend a voice to those without presently.
Available for commissioned work, Anessa specializes in composition for musical theatre, along with arrangements and orchestrations for all genres.
